EMPOWERing Youth with Visual Impairment

EMPOWER is a new federally funded program focused on supporting transition-age youth with visual impairment. The goal of EMPOWER is to equip transition-aged students living in rural communities, their families, and the transition professionals who serve them with virtual supports to improve postsecondary education and employment outcomes.

The EMPOWER website (empowervi.org) has interactive lessons for students with VI, and courses for adults on different transition-related topics. Courses are fully accessible and free. Later this year, EMPOWER will be launching a mentorship program to connect transition-age students with adults with VI who are employed or attending a postsecondary education program. Sign up for EMPOWER’s newsletter to stay up to date and engage in their work. To learn more about their current survey study for recent graduates, visit their website’s research page.

Each year during March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and its partners, which includes our very own Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities, work together to create a Developmental Disabilities  Awareness Month (DDAM) social media campaign that highlights the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities. The theme this year is “A World of Opportunities.”

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

To find out more about the NACDD’s DDAM social campaign or to download the DDAM 2024 image (featured above) which includes artwork from Alaskan artist Lee Waters, click here.

Then, join us for a month of empowerment by supporting the developmental disabilities community! From inclusive workshops to informative panel discussions, host events designed to raise awareness and promote acceptance. Let’s come together to create a more inclusive world!

Don’t forget to share creative and informative posts on social media using the hashtags: DDawareness2024, #DDAM2024, #AWorldofOpportunities, or #NewOpportunities.
