Dear Pathfinder Community,

As we embrace the falling leaves, the unpredictable weather, and the aroma of pumpkin spice everywhere this October, it’s a good time to reflect on how we can grow and help others as the year begins to wind down.

October is recognized nationally as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)This month highlights the importance of job opportunities for people with disabilities.

Having a job means more than just earning a paycheck. It helps people learn new skills, build connections with others, and gain independence. These are valuable for anyone, but they can have an even bigger impact on people with disabilities who are working toward a full and independent life.

Unfortunately, many people with disabilities face challenges when trying to find a job. Some of these challenges are out of their control, and others are simply overlooked.

In my work with Pathfinder, I’ve seen how hard it can be for people with disabilities to get and keep a job. Below are some of the most common barriers they may face:

  • Disability limitations: A person’s disability may make it hard to find a job that matches their skills and abilities.
  • Transportation issues: Wheelchair-friendly cars, buses, or vans are not always available or affordable for everyone.
  • Job site barriers: Some workplaces are not set up in ways that allow people with disabilities to work there safely or comfortably.
  • Lack of tools or supports: Many employers do not know about the tools or adjustments that can help people with disabilities do their jobs well.
  • Negative attitudes: Some people may judge a person unfairly or not give them a fair chance.

We know these challenges can feel overwhelming, but Pathfinder is here to help. In this issue of our newsletter, we’re focusing on ways to break down these barriers and create pathways to employment success for people with disabilities. Whether it’s sharing tips for job seekers, resources for families, or information for employers, we hope this issue inspires you to think about how we can all play a role in opening doors for people with disabilities.

If you or someone you know is facing barriers to employment, we encourage you to reach out to us. Please share our Pathfinder helpline, Community Support Helpline, and website with parents, caregivers, and people with disabilities who may need guidance. We’re here to provide support, offer solutions, and create a safe space for everyone.

Together, let’s work to empower abilities and open doors to employment success for all.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Padron
