CALLER:

Hi. Do you have any resources for tutoring? My daughter Mary needs extra help in reading and math. And with my new work schedule and my other children, I’m concerned that I won’t have enough time to work with her. She has a learning disability and is turning eight this fall. She has been doing a reading program at our local library this summer, but it is pretty slow going. We live in Hamilton County.

CALL PATHFINDER:

A great free tutoring resource available to English-speaking and English-learning students across the state is the Homework Hotline which reopens on August 16. For free homework help call 615-298-6636.

Retired and certified teachers man the phones and answer all sorts of questions for K-12 students, from 4-8 p.m., Monday through Thursdays. Any student can call when there is a need, but students can sign up for weekly help and work with a specific teacher (or their back up teacher).

One thing that is very helpful for multilingual students is the availability of teachers who speak different languages; they have help in Arabic, Spanish, French, Hindi, and Farsi.  The primary school class subjects are reading, language arts, math, social studies, science, Spanish, and more. High school subjects include calculus, trigonometry, physics, and chemistry.

One Homework Hotline office is located in Nashville.  Memphis Shelby County Schools (MSCS) also provides free tutoring to MSCS students, from 4-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, by calling (901) 416-1234.

Another great resource for students in the Chattanooga area is The Southeast Reading Center. It provides dyslexia screenings, educational assessments, and structured literacy interventions for students struggling with reading, regardless of age.

East Tennessee is doubly blessed with the Korn Learning, Assessment and Social Skills Center, a research facility and part of the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at The University of Tennessee Knoxville.

Part of Korn’s mission is to assist students and others (age 2 to 60) who struggle academically, need more effective learning strategies, or struggle with social adjustment. They also work with parents and educators in identifying, preventing, and remediating behavioral, social-emotional, and academic problems.

And of course you can also use online databases like Wyzant to seek out and hire individual tutors, for private pay.

Happy Studying Ya’ll!
