We focus on simple, practical technology solutions that improve daily life and help individuals and families stay connected to the resources they need.

Technology and Employment: Tools for Real Jobs

When we talk about empowering abilities, employment is the ultimate goal, and technology is proving to be a game-changer in making that goal a reality. Tennessee’s Department of Disability and Aging (DDA), in partnership with TechFirst SHIFT, is leading the way through its Technology First Accreditation and Employment First Education and Certification initiatives.

The Employment First Project is built on a simple principle: competitive, integrated employment should be the first and preferred option for people with disabilities. To make that vision real, TechFirst SHIFT equips agencies and professionals with the tools and training they need

to support individuals in securing and thriving in real jobs, not practice roles or segregated settings. Through specialized certifications for job coaches, job developers, and organizational leaders, the program ensures that employment services align with each person’s skills, interests, and goals.

Technology First complements this mission by introducing enabling technologies, smart devices, remote support systems, and mobile apps that remove barriers and promote independence at work. These tools help employees manage tasks, communicate effectively, and access support when needed, creating a seamless bridge between ability and opportunity.

Celebrating 2025 Award Recipients
This year, ten organizations earned full scholarships for Technology First education and accreditation, demonstrating their commitment to innovation and inclusion. These providers are setting the standard for integrating technology into employment supports, paving the way for more Tennesseans with disabilities to achieve meaningful careers.
