Navigating resources can be difficult, and differences in abilities, culture, and language can make it even more challenging. By bridging these differences, we aim to strengthen connections to the resources and support people need most. This section highlights programs and shares tools that address these challenges, fostering greater opportunities to access disability resources and creating stronger connections across abilities, cultures, and languages. We’re also spotlighting peer support spaces, caregiver networks, and community-based programs that offer encouragement and shared experience, because finding help is easier when we do it together.
Encuentro Latino: Resource Network and Community Connection
Story by Camille Carter, Encuentro Latino
Encuentro Latino is a network created to help the Latin community in Middle Tennessee stay connected to useful services and information. It is supported by the Outreach Program (MOP) at Mental Health America of the Midsouth and focuses on helping families understand where to go when they need support.
Most of the people involved identify as Hispanic, and the network is also open to anyone who works with or supports Latin families, whether in a job, volunteer role, or local leadership. People do not need to speak Spanish to join, but both English and Spanish are used, so everyone can participate comfortably.
Each month, the group meets to share updates about workshops, medical programs, support for people who have experienced abuse, legal guidance, and community events. The goal is to make sure families know what resources exist and how to get connected when a need comes up. Members also share job openings and job fairs when those are available in their organizations or communities.
Their gatherings last one hour and may be in person, online, or a mix of both. A typical meeting includes a 30‑minute presentation, time for questions, and a short segment for local news and announcements. English is the primary language used, w
ith Spanish included as needed.
