Community Connections – January 2026

Split-screen graphic with two sections. On the left, a textured teal and green background features large white text reading “COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS” with a gold compass logo below and the words “Tennessee Disability Pathfinder.” On the right, an illustrated design shows diverse individuals, including people using wheelchairs, gathered around a globe labeled “Connectability.” Surrounding the globe are icons and speech bubbles with words such as “Resources,” “Access,” “Empower,” “Support,” “Language,” and “Engage.” The background includes abstract patterns and symbols representing communication and collaboration.
Navigating resources can be difficult, and differences in abilities, culture, and language can make it even more challenging. By bridging these differences, we aim to strengthen connections to the resources and support people need most. This section highlights programs and shares tools that address these challenges, fostering greater opportunities to access disability resources and creating stronger connections across abilities, cultures, and languages. We’re also spotlighting peer support spaces, caregiver networks, and community-based programs that offer encouragement and shared experience, because finding help is easier when we do it together.
A group of people gathered outdoors in front of a green banner that reads “GRANDPARENTS AS PARENTS – OFFICE ON AGING.” The setting appears to be a grassy park or open field with trees in the background. Several individuals are seated at a table with a chessboard in the foreground, while others stand nearby. One person is wearing a green shirt with white text that says “MORE THAN A NUTRIT” (partially visible). The scene suggests a community or family-oriented event focused on grandparents raising grandchildren.

Supporting Grandfamilies: Clearer Pathways for Grandparents Raising Children

Across East Tennessee, many grandparents and relatives are stepping into the role of parent again—often unexpectedly. The Grandparents as Parents (GAP) program is here to make that journey less overwhelming and more connected. It’s about creating clearer pathways for caregivers and children, and embracing new beginnings together.

Why GAP Matters

Life changes can bring challenges, but they also open doors to growth and resilience. GAP provides:

  • Monthly gatherings and conference calls for peer support and expert advice
  • A free guidebook packed with practical tips on custody, financial help, education, and more
  • Case management and referrals to connect families with resources they need

Building Community

Parenting again can feel isolating, but GAP reminds caregivers they are not alone. Through shared experiences and expert-led sessions, families gain confidence and build lasting connections.
