Disability Awareness & Inclusion during the Holidays

Disability inclusion means understanding the relationship between how people function and how they participate in society and ensuring everybody has the same opportunities to participate in every aspect of life to the best of their abilities and desires. To effectively spread awareness and foster inclusion, each month we commemorate and share Disability Awareness information, resources, and celebrations.

It’s that time of year when the stockings are hung by the chimney with care and homes are filled with beautifully decorated Christmas trees and holiday decor. Some families choose themes or color schemes while others choose personal interests or other passions to spruce up their holiday trees.  While you’re decorating with family and friends with all the joy this holiday brings, remember advocating for disability awareness and inclusion is a beautiful sentiment indeed!

Make this holiday special by adding ornaments to your tree that honor, celebrate and spread awareness. Ornaments for various diagnoses like ASD, ASL and even Braille can be found at different retailers like Amazon, Target, or Walmart and Etsy shops.  Just search the names of the kind of ornament you would like and with a little holiday magic you may just find something to match your decor. You can also create your own as a holiday project. Whichever way you get them, just remember that inclusion matters and is appreciated during the holidays.
