Across Tennessee, people with disabilities are proving every day that they have the skills, determination, and drive to succeed in the workplace. The challenge isn’t talent, it’s access to the right opportunities, support, and guidance to turn potential into meaningful employment.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). While raising awareness matters, real progress is measured by the jobs people can actually get and keep.
“Tennessee continues to be a leader for employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities,” said Commissioner Brad Turner of the Tennessee Department of Disability and Aging. “This report is proof that Employment First matters.”
That’s the big-picture view. But what does it mean for someone sitting in Jackson, Johnson City, or Memphis who wants to work?
Pathways You Can Take
For job seekers, possible paths you can take to turn the goal of employment into action:
- Start Your Journey. Let Tennessee Disability Pathfinder be your guide for employment resources. Contact us by phone at 1-800-640-4636, email: TNPathfinder@vumc.org, or via chat on our website at TNPathfinder.org. There’s no need to go down the rabbit hole of searching when our information and referral specialists are here to help you find employment resources available in your area of Tennessee.
- Meet with Vocational Rehabilitation (VR). A VR counselor can help identify strengths, set career goals, and map out the support needed. For some, that might mean training programs; for others, it could mean assistive technology or short-term work experiences.
- Test the tools. Services available through the Tennessee Technology Access Program (TTAP) and Enabling Technology Program allow individuals to borrow, try, or see demonstrations of adaptive devices before making a decision or purchasing.
- Secure support on the job. Programs like IPS Supported Employment offer one-on-one coaching to help individuals with mental health conditions start, adjust, and maintain employment. Vocational Rehabilitation can also assist you with ongoing support it provides to individuals to help them maintain employment.
- Know your rights and options. Disability Rights Tennessee offers free advocacy if workplace barriers arise, while the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) provides simple, low-cost ideas for adjustments that help employees succeed.
More Than Just Numbers
The Expect Employment Report shows that Tennessee narrowed the disability employment gap by eight percentage points over the last year. But progress isn’t just about statistics. It’s about Tennesseans who see a paycheck, gain independence, and contribute their talents.
The Role of Employers
Advocates say Tennessee’s momentum depends on employers taking the next step. That doesn’t always mean major expenses; sometimes it’s as simple as offering flexible hours, pairing a new hire with a mentor, or connecting with local VR offices to find qualified candidates.
Employers who have opened their doors often report unexpected benefits: stronger retention, fresh perspectives, and more loyal teams.
Looking Ahead
For Tennesseans with disabilities, the path to work can still feel complex. But it’s clearer today than it was even a few years ago. The state has built resources. Community organizations are stepping in. Awareness is shifting to action.
Employment is more than a paycheck; it’s independence, stability, and dignity. Tennessee’s message is clear: the opportunities are there, and the next step is making sure they reach every person who’s ready to work.
