ConnectAbility – February 2025

colorful cartoon graphic image with different people of different abilities, colors, etc. surrounding a globe with text "ConnectAbility." Quote bubbles around the image near the people figures say "Support, Access, Empower, Language, Educate, Engage." On the top left of the image in a blue circle is the disability symbol. On the top right of the image is Pathfinder's logo. And text on the top center of the image says, "RESOURCES."

Navigating resources can be difficult, but differences in abilities, culture, and language can make it even more challenging. By bridging these differences, we aim to emphasize the connection to the necessary resources and support. We’re highlighting programs and sharing resources that address these challenges, fostering greater opportunities to utilize disability resources and creating stronger connections across abilities, cultures, and languages.

Advocacy and Love: A Foundation for Community and Change
by Andrea Castillo, SSCBT, TN Disability Pathfinder

Advocacy is about standing up for those who may not have the voice, resources, or platform to be heard. It can be deeply personal—supporting a loved one through challenges—or broader, working toward policy changes that uplift entire communities. Within the Latinx community, advocacy often means preserving cultural identity, ensuring access to essential services, and fostering spaces where every voice matters.

Love, at its core, is about self-worth and mutual respect. It’s recognizing your own value, treating yourself with kindness, and nurturing relationships built on understanding and care. True love—whether for yourself, your family, or your community—is rooted in dignity, respect, and the belief that everyone deserves to be seen and heard.

Love advocacy is about fostering relationships that are healthy, compassionate, and empowering. It means promoting open dialogue, emotional well-being, and the strength that comes from solidarity. Whether through education, activism, or everyday interactions, we have the power to shape a world where love and advocacy go hand in hand.

How does love advocacy resonate with you this month?

Connect with Social Security from Anywhere with Social Security Video Connect

Social Security Video Connect lets you handle Social Security matters through a secure video call—no office visit needed! Get assistance with benefits, overpayments, Medicare, SSI redeterminations, and certain Social Security card updates. Some requests may still require an in-person interview.

How It Works:

  1. Call your local Social Security office or 1-800-772-1213 (M-F, 8 AM – 7 PM) to request a video appointment.
  2. A representative will determine if video service is an option based on your request. You’ll need a device with a web camera and internet access.
  3. If eligible, provide your email to receive an MS Teams appointment link.
  4. Use the link at your scheduled time to connect.
  5. If you need to reschedule or have issues, contact your local office or call the number above.

If video is not an option, you may still complete some services online or schedule a phone or in-person appointment.
