Research is a key component for making new discoveries and improving the lives of people with disabilities. It can also provide participants insight and support regarding their conditions, especially when there is a gap in services. Here are a few studies that may be of interest.

Pregnancy Study

On the right of the text is a graphic of a yellow and orange smiling sun.Are you pregnant and planning to deliver at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC)? If so, you and your baby may be eligible to take part in a research study. This study will examine factors that lead to the development of food allergies and eczema in young babies and toddlers.

The study is open to pregnant persons who plan to deliver at VUMC in Nashville and their infants. They also offer study participation to fathers of the infant. The study will include:

  •  7 visits in your OB office or at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt during pregnancy and the first 3 years of your child’s life
  •  Sample Collection (blood, urine, hair, stool, skin tapes and swabs, nasal swabs, cord blood, breast milk, self-collected vaginal swabs)
  • Questionnaires related to you and your child’s health, diet, and environment
  • Allergy testing of your child

To thank you for your time and participation, participants will be compensated for each visit, as well as for the surveys, and samples you collect, at home.

Infant Play Study

Vanderbilt University is seeking infants 6-18 months old to participate in a study about how infants play in everyday life. In this study, your child will play in a lab playroom filled with fun toys, like cars and balls. The session will be video-recorded and will last 1 hour. You will be with your child the entire time. Participants receive a $20 Amazon gift card. The study will take place at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Parking will be provided.

Parent/Caregiver Study

Healthcare providers aim to educate parents and caregivers about hearing. In order to know where professionals may be lacking in communication, they are interested in what you think about hearing. This study includes a questionnaire asking about caregiver awareness of childhood hearing health. Participants will be compensated with a $10 e-gift card. Participation in this study is completely voluntary.

Participation Criteria

Inclusion Criteria
 Participants must be a parent or main caregiver
 The participant must have an infant who is ~3-6 months old

Exclusion Criteria
 The participant should not have an infant with diagnosed hearing loss

Study Tasks or Visits
For this study you will answer the questions of the questionnaire.

Study Length
It should take 15-30 minutes to complete.

Adolescent Development in Youth with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder Study

Dr. Blythe Corbett and the SENSE Lab at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are currently recruiting both children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typical development to be a part of a study that examines stress, social interactions, pubertal development, mental health, and gender in children and adolescents with ASD. This study will take place over a four-year period with up to two visits in the first year, and then one visit annually until the completion of the study.

We invite 8- to 16-year-old boys and girls with autism or typical development to be part of our research.

Participation in this study includes:
1. Psychological testing and physical exam, 2-3 hours
2. Social interaction, physiological data collection, and, EEG tasks, 2 hours
3. Follow-up assessments once per year for a total time commitment of up to 4 years.

For participating in our research, we offer up to $100 for each yearly visit (Psychological Testing, $50; EEG Task and Social Interaction, $25; Home saliva samples and questionnaires, $25) in the form of cash, a check, or a gift card. In addition, a research letter with test results from psychological testing, is provided annually.

This is a great way to learn about science and help other kids!

Rhythm, Language and Communication in Autism (Adults) Study

The Vanderbilt Music Cognition Laboratory/Communication and Language Laboratory team is conducting a new research study and would appreciate your assistance! Please review the following information, and contact our staff members with any questions. Thanks so much in advance for your community support and interest in this opportunity!

Participant Criteria:
Native English-speaking adults (18-40 years old) willing to participate in ~2 study visits at Vanderbilt. Autistic and non-autistic adults are eligible to participate.

Research Study Description:
Participants will be asked to complete various language, communication/conversation, and rhythm activities during ~2 study visits (duration of ~1-2 hours per session). If appropriate, participants may also have the opportunity to receive an autism assessment.

Compensation Details:
Participants will be compensated in gift cards of $25 per visit ($75 maximum) for all study visits.
