Practical Safety Tips: Helping First Responders Help You
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Being informed and prepared can make a significant difference when an emergency occurs.
When calling 911, many people may not know what information is important for first responders to have before they arrive. Providing critical information in advance can help first responders better understand the situation, identify potential challenges, and determine what resources may be needed.
Here are two FREE programs that can help you prepare.
Tennessee Yellow Dot Program
In January 2014, the Tennessee Department of Transportation launched the Tennessee Yellow Dot Program. The program allows individuals to voluntarily provide important medical and emergency contact information that can assist first responders during an emergency.
An emergency could include a traffic crash, medical emergency, or situation in which someone is unconscious or unable to communicate while in a vehicle or other location.
The information provided through the Yellow Dot Program can help first responders make more informed decisions about your care based on your medical needs, medications, disabilities, or other important circumstances.
How the Yellow Dot Program Works
1. Find an enrollment location. There are enrollment locations throughout Tennessee where individuals can obtain a Yellow Dot packet and receive assistance completing the medical information form. The program is FREE.
2. Complete your packet. The packet includes:
- A Yellow Dot envelope
- A medical information form
- A Yellow Dot sticker
3. Gather important information. Have a current photograph of yourself available for the packet. If multiple people regularly operate or ride in the vehicle and have different medical conditions, consider completing a separate packet for each person.
Helpful Tip: If you or someone in your household may experience a language barrier, consider including that information so first responders can arrange appropriate interpretation services when necessary.
4. Add your photograph. After completing the medical information form, place your current photograph on the form.
5. Display the Yellow Dot sticker. Place the Yellow Dot sticker on the rear windshield of your vehicle. The sticker alerts first responders that important medical information may be available inside the vehicle.
6. Store your information securely. Place the completed medical information form and photograph inside the Yellow Dot envelope and store it in your vehicle’s glove compartment.
That’s it! You’re prepared.

Smart911
Now let’s talk about emergencies that may occur at your home or another location associated with you.
Smart911 is a FREE nationwide public safety service that allows individuals to create a private and secure safety profile containing information that may be important to first responders.
Unlike the Yellow Dot Program, which is primarily designed to provide information associated with a vehicle, Smart911 can provide additional information about your household and the people, animals, and circumstances responders may encounter.
Your profile can include information such as:
- Individuals associated with your address
- Children
- Senior citizens who may have mobility concerns
- Pets
- Individuals with physical or intellectual/developmental disabilities
- Medical or other information that may be important during an emergency
When you call 911, information from your Smart911 profile may be available to participating public safety agencies. This can give dispatchers and first responders additional information to help them understand the situation before they arrive.
Having this information in advance may help responders determine how best to approach the situation, communicate with individuals at the location, and identify whether additional resources may be necessary.
Smart911 Takeaways:
1. It’s private, secure, and FREE. You control the information included in your profile, and the information is made available to participating public safety agencies for emergency response purposes.
2. Keep your information current. If your household changes, update your profile so responders have the most accurate information possible.
3. Emergency notifications may also be available. Depending on your location and participating agencies, Smart911 may provide emergency notifications through methods such as text messages, phone calls, email, or mobile applications. Notifications may include information about severe weather, road closures, and other emergencies.

Prepare today. It could make a difference tomorrow.
